For Hot Crappie Action – Don’t Forget the Basics

Crappies are delicious and very enjoyable to catch. So what if you’re a crappie fishing beginner — where do you start?

Some of these beginner Crappie tips can be used to develop an adventurous path into catching Crappie!

  • You shouldn’t waste a wad of cash buying tons of fishing tackle gear. Fishing line that is light in weight is the main requirement for landing Crappie. (A 4-8 lb. mono filament line is recommended), a few number two hooks (My own personal preference is Eagle Claw brand wire braid gold hooks), and some lightweight sinkers, and corks. While you’re at it, consider buying some Crappie jigs. Most sporting goods stores carry jig sets with multiple head weights for under $10.
  • As Crappie bait goes, live minnows are almost always the best. These may be purchased from the bait store in the area. Tie a number two hook to the line’s bottom is approximately eighteen inches beneath the cork. One may test out various depths. Adjustment of the cork downwards probably over 36 inches below the cork, might be required. You will find the right spot if you have a variety of poles that you can fish with at varying depths.
  • Choose fishing poles with light action. Rod and reel combos can be quite costly, but there is no reason to spend that much on one. It’s actually possible to have success using a bamboo type fishing pole. An ideal fishing rig will be one that is light in weight, like the Zebco 404 rod and reel. You should not buy a medium action or heavy action fishing rod if you are fishing for Crappie. These rods can also mask the sensation of a bite.
  • Locate the place you wish to fish from. It’s simple to catch crappies in rivers, lakes, feeder creeks, and ponds. When fishing in a large body of water, the autumn and spring will be the ideal opportunities for catching fish from the bank if you’re not a boat owner. Seek out the type of cover that crappie tend to use as hiding places. Wedging themselves into brush or hiding beneath logs are two of their favorite things to do.
  • When fishing from a boat or pier, at the bottom tie a light weight, then tie a loop knot approximately eight to twelve inches above the weight then place a number two hook onto the loop. Secure a hook beneath the dorsal fin of your minnow, then let the line descend to around the halfway point. Generally, crappie aren’t found at the bottom, thus you should descend just about halfway at first. Drop to 3/4 down if you don’t feel any Crappie bites on the line.
  • When fishing with a jig, try eighth of an ounce jig heads at first. Chartreuse is really efficient for Crappie fishing, thus I recommend beginning with it. Let the jig descend near a stump or log and let it down all the way. Find some cover, and drop again. Remember to go back and put your jig in its prior place at least one additional time prior to giving up.

After you figure out the right method, it isn’t that hard to land Crappie. Yet, like with other things, the more you try it, the better you get. Go out today and start hunting Crappie for yourself!
